I just thought it would be kinda interesting. Close your eyes and pick five random books on your bookshelf and list them. And if you like, list what you're currently reading.

Here I go:

1.)The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo
2.)Wild Seed by Octavia Butler
3.)Beowulf translated by Burton Raffel
4.)Tolkien's World From A to Z: The Complete Guide to Middle Earth
5.)The Life of Pi by Yann Martel

And one of the books I'm working on right now:
Why Buffy Matters by Rhonda Wilcox

This is what happens when I'm bored.

Okay, so I've got a ton of pictures from my phone, but it's taking forever to upload them... and I was gonna wait and do this with the pictures, but I suppose I'll just write a short entry now.
So this weekend (last weekend?), my brother had a bowling tournament down in Roanoke, and my whole family went with him. Me too. It was kinda fun/kinda scary/a bit depressing. Fun stuff first!
(Oh, and I'd just like to point out that, I'm gone for three days and what do I find when I get home? Every single one of my favorite fics has been updated! I love it!)
Okay, know what? I've changed me mind, and I'm too hungry to do a huge lj-cutty post right now, and I don't even remember how to do an lj-cut (...), so I'm just gonna leave you with a picture. ^_^ And I swear I'll post more later, cuz I took a lot of pictures and I wanna share them!

Downpour, downpour, we abhor the downpour... Okay, rain = no fun. Rain = I had to cancel my haircut appointment. No haircut = grrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

But besides that, I had a good weekend. Friday afternoon, listened to Brad play his guitar at Mason, which was fun. Friday night, listened to Bethy play her tuba at Mason. (Beth, you're awesome!) Saturday, made sweet music love with Laura and watched Sid and Nancy, which I kinda don't wanna give back to Netflix.
I dunno, I'm still kind of trying to decide if I like it or not. Apparently it's very fictionalized...and I hate Nancy most of the time... but I like Sid. So, if there was just Sid instead of Sid and Nancy, maybe I'd actually go out and buy it. I dunno, if I see it used somewhere I'll get it.
Sunday, helped out at a birthday party. 12 screaming 7-year-olds = scaaaaaary. 0_0
Oh, and the best part, Saturday night we got new cell phones, so now I have a camera phone and it's very pretty. Got a new TV, too. 27 inches, I think. It's very pretty.
Just watched the premiere of Kyle XY, the boy with no bellybutton... So far it's an interesting enough show. The script needs a little work, and his constant inner monologues when he's not supposed to speak English are a little annoying, but I might actually watch more of it... (And now I gotta go with the hurt/comfortyness of the birthdayverse!Angel icon, because there seems to be a slight theme tonight with vulnerable, slightly crazy guys... lol.)
And now I'm a bit sleepy. G'night, folks.

    <lj:music>Girlyman - This Is Me</lj:music>

So I've had a fun last couple of days. ^_^

(Noteage: Companion post to Beth's, 'cause she got hers done first and it's probably much more concise than mine.)
Last night, went to Otani's with Beth and Rachel. Beth came to my house and we drove there and spent most of the time comparing driving instructors. Scaaary scaaaary... So glad all that's over. Waited for Rachel to show up and laughed at the lady who was all like, "Wow, look at the chef! He can flip spatulas!"
So Rachel got there and we ate yummy yummy food. Or talked a lot and sort of ate yummy food...
Next came the ever-amusing loitering! Stood outside Otani's for awhile practicing our sign language naughty words. (Dirty whore.) (Cheese!) Rachel told stories about our former driving instructor, aka "The Beast", and made my stomach hurt. (Note to self: laughing hysterically when you've just eaten a lot = ow.) So after we loitered outside Otani's, we walked over to Rachel's car and admired how someone had run into the CVS Drive-thru sign. Also, somewhere in there we came up with "Deer with hydraulics" and Beth did the funniest deer impression ever. ^___^
Decided to wander around the big shopping center for a little while. Saw an Indian restaurant/hookah bar, a hot tub place (Closed, but with the hot tub still on inside...), a Vietnamese place, and an Indian market where they sold videos and *gasp!* milk. And the Vietnamese place sold bubble-tea called Boba, in all kinds of amusing flavors. (Strawberry, avocado, lychee, coffee I think, can't remember the others now but there were several things I'd never heard of...) And naturally, the tea being called Boba made me think of Boba Fett, which somehow led to drinking the tea out of the Boba Fett helmet, which conjured up Indiana Jones images of monkey brains, and it was a whole crazy thing...
Then we turned around and shopping-center-loitered in the other direction, passing briefly through Shopper's (which always reminds me of GrandMart...) and looking at the "pedophilile" (or that's what I heard, anyway) in the newspaper store.
Eventually we got tired of standing and decided to drive over to Starbucks. Rachel made me sad with her mad driving skillz 'cause she got there first (but I made a pretty good U-turn. Yay for me!).
(*sob* The lightbulb just burnt out in my lamp... And now it's all weird-lighty 'cause the only other light I have has colered lampshades... -_-)
Anyway, hung out at Starbucks for about an hour. I now have $0.06 left on my Starbucks gift card! Whee! And I got to taste Beth's frappucino (...?) which tasted like coffee-smell. Yum. I thought I saw a lemur in the wall art, but upon closer inspection it turned out to be a coffee-bean-pouring-thingy. Also, cherry coffee beans... Or, I forget exactly what they were called now, but we had this whole theory where somehow they managed to get coffee beans inside the cherries.
But by far the best part was looking at the personal ads in the newspaper. Trying to figure out what all the acronyms meant was fun, too. Beth's very good at it. But we still can't figure out what WIAF or WIWF mean...
Anyway, I'll try to find my favorites... (stole the paper from Starbucks. Bad me.)

"I'm not looking for a wife. Let's go dancing and African drumming. SBM looking for sexy, sassy white or bi-racial lady."

"Wind Therapy. 42-year-old with SWM, with boat seeks first mate, a SWF for casual sailing on the Chesapeake Bay."

"You: Brunette guy dressed with casual jacket and big belt buckle. Me: Tall, brunette guy in a dark blue jacket and jeans. Made eye contact a couple of times on my way out the door. Love your style. Interested in meeting?"

"Moviestar looks. Hard body. Can't hang on to women. Ex says I'm arrogant & difficult. No particular hobbies or exciting job. ISO patient woman."

Anyway, there were too many funny ones to put them all down, but definitely worth a read once in awhile. I think I'm going to try writing stories about some of these people...
After I almost died from laughing several times, Starbucks finally closed and made us go home. But much fun was had, and there are plans for pho noodles in the future! w00t.

So, I went to the Herndon Festival today. Looked at the arts-and-craftsy stuff a bit, had a sno-cone (yum!), bought some Cranberry-Orange bread (double yum!), and basically sat on the grass listening to music and not riding any rides or winning stuffed animals.
However, I did hear this band that I quite like now. Girlyman: two girls, one guy, folk-y with banjos! and a baritone!guitar. I didn't even know baritone guitars existed... So I bought both CDs, and I'm liking them so far. Lately I've been listening to a lot of punk, so it's nice to get back to softer folky music, too.
Oooooooh, and on our way home the sunset was really, incredibly pretty.
(You can tell I'm getting sleepy, 'cause my description of today was much shorter than yesterday's...)

Yanyway, methinks it's bedtime, so g'night all!

Okay, so I just upgraded to a sponsored account... Gonna have to get used to the adverts, but hey! More userpics! Gotta love it.

So, I went for a... 6-mile bike ride today, I think. It was actually pretty fun, apart from me being kinda sore now. It was a cross-county trail that was part dirt path through the woods, part gravel, and and part pavement. Went under the toll road at one point (there was a creek, so = bridge) and that was really cool. Just hearing the cars going over the bridge above me, sounded like thunder... There was graffiti all over the walls, too, and some people had written big monologues in sharpie over the graffiti. Didn't have much time to stop and read them, 'cause I had to keep up with my dad, but it was all this teen-angsty stuff. ^_^

I went to see X-Men 3 on Friday night. I liked it just as much as the other two, and enjoyed seeing new characters, too. Although I really missed Nightcrawler. And I wished Angel had been a bigger part of it. And I stayed for the credits, and after that scene I was like, "Whaaaaaaat?"
Oh, it was really funny. At the beginning of the movie, when the 20th Century Fox logo went up, some kid yelled, "Yay!" and everybody started laughing.
And I don't know if it was just because it was opening night or what, but it was a very... interactive?... show. Everybody was clapping or laughing at certain parts, and I just love that, when everyone really gets into the movie like that.
About the Xavier thing: After the movie, I was joking with my uncle, "So, what did he do? After he exploded he telepathically picked up the shards of his brain, mushed them back together again, fed-exed his brain to coma-guy, and now he's inside coma-guy's body?"
Oh, and what's up with... I think her name was Arclight? The chick with the meshy shirt and the weird hair with the curls in front? She freaked me out... Couldn't figure out if she was a guy or a girl at first...
And Kitty looked like she was 12 years old! I really hope they weren't trying to go for the Kitty/Bobby romantic angle, 'cause that would just be kinda squicky... I heard that Summer Glau auditioned for Kitty. Wish she had gotten the part instead...

And those were the highlights of my weekend so far. I'll leave you with a Gravitation music video that people keep sending me the link to... <lj:music>Ramones - I Wanna Be Sedated (appropriate, ne?)</lj:music>

Okay, so in an hour and a half I'm gonna have my wisdom teeth taken out. Eeps... Kinda nervous about that. Also really hungry, cuz since I'm going to be sedated I can't eat or drink anything...
On a more positive note, I've gotten all my grades back from this semester and my cumulative GPA right now is 3.85, which I think is pretty damn good. So yay!
Went over to Laura's yesterday, and we wrote a new song. Well, it's still untitled and it doesn't have any lyrics, but we're working on it. It was cool, though, 'cause we played the whole song through and we just kept up with each other completely. Even did a fun fade-out thiing at the end. 'Twas great fun. Aaaand, she showed me this awesome website, Pandora.com. You search for a particular artist or song, and the website gives you similar artists that you might like. And it actually plays the whole song, not some thirty-second iTunes sample crap. It's really nice for finding new bands, especially for types like me who never listen to the radio and consequently have no idea of what's out there.
Anyway, wisdom teeth time. woot.

Alrighty, so I'm in the process of translating the transcript of the Firefly episode "Shindig" into Engrish. So far it's incredibly funny/slightly confusing.

INT. POOL HALL - NIGHT (NIGHT 1)
That is the smoke darkness. As for four tables there is a play. Approximately 15 people, is mostly human here. The bartender is useful to the beer of the heavy wooden ball. The small table arranges the edge of the room. MAL and JAYNE two other people, do the light/write and the holder. INARA with the beautiful supplies, looks at the glass where the liquor of pink is small, grasps. She the only color, is elegant only. Shock lining up, you speak the light/write simultaneously. In that clue there is a ring on the light right before the point.

WRIGHT: It was not necessary almost to change the boat. (re: shot) Corner 6. At a certain place a stronger lock, as for the door and the storing which are thicker because there is everyone s'posed. Many rations do not have to be needed.

Because him you see according to that clue, sphere everything of the table blinks, the going out in just a little between, then reappears. Generality the roaring voice which it could point boringly comes from all players of the room.

WRIGHT: Just a little!

He sees in the bartender the other patron/patroness the way. The bartender point which is bored to vulgar sign,: "In the failure of sphere" the management which is responsibility (and Chinese that. The sphere which you say) as for the light/write that you do not shoot, does not sink is tried.

WRIGHT: Blinking threw me.

The revolution of MAL. He walks the table which is inspected.

JAYNE: (to Wright) It gains the money and is high.

WRIGHT: The fist, deliver my friend. The border planet needs work. The crew of Terraforming obtained wonderful mortality rate.

MAL: Pocket side.

Another ones which as for MAL that you shoot, line up are made.

MAL: (cont’d) Work. The slave is meant.

WRIGHT: They were not the volunteer for ugly certainty.

MAL: Why whether it was not necessary to put at many rations that?

WRIGHT: I did not inquire about dissatisfaction.

You laugh the light/write and the holder.

JAYNE: Your which rank money? Lot?

MAL lets escape shock and step due to Inara. She uses the brush on the ash of the tobacco from the chair which makes the place in order to sit down separated.

MAL: When you think that you would like to take the lead in the boat, there is a chance which is.

INARA: Well, I am all right. You hold this, really in heart.

MAL: (amused, disbelieving) Obtaining you obtain? Something has held in heart?

INARA: I like the fact that you look at the game. In the same way as other state, the key seems that gives the back section of the heavy stick and position in Jayne.

ANGLE ON: Jayne which sinks one of small-numbered remaining sphere. As for MAL you smile to Inara:

MAL: We should remove exceedingly in the front part, rather than, cause long and still think with of the callous. Approximately certain thief seems the way.

INARA: Thief?

MAL tilts with end, a handful of paper currency of Inara which is inserted.

MAL: He took this right from those separated. They amount obtained that of the sweat their slave tradin.

INARA: Mal!

MAL: Terrible shame. 'Course, as for those until doing the payment of the following beverage it goes you do not become aware to that—

WRIGHT: Just a little!

MAL: Good drinker, that.

The hand of the light/write falls being the shoulder of MAL, heavily. The revolution and land mighty punch of MAL. With those rear, the holder jumps in order to help the light/write. It tackles Jayne him. Because the light/write the foot of MAL from under him kicks Inara vis-a-vis the wall, it jumps. MAL goes down. There is a holder for the second time, shakes pool clue with Jayne. MAL, in the floor with the light/write, the basis of the small table and ram that it grasps. It flies the light/write. That is confound conflict. The other patron/patroness jumps in order to connect. Inara jumps the glass being her head soon, when it pulverizes. She in the fast door takes the lead. She when she goes, transfers the bartender simultaneously.

INARA: Beautiful place. I call to my friend.

END TEASER.

And here's the actual script, just in case you can't make ANY sense out of it...

INT. POOL HALL - NIGHT (NIGHT 1)
It's dark, smoky. Four tables are in play. There are about 15 people in here, mostly men. A BARTENDER serves beer in heavy wooden bowls. Small tables line the edges of the room.
MAL and JAYNE play two other men, WRIGHT and HOLDER. INARA, in a beautiful outfit, watches and holds a small glass of pink liqueur. She is the only color, only elegance.
WRIGHT is lining up a shot and talking at the same time. His cue has a ring of light right before the tip.
WRIGHT
Didn't hardly have to convert the
ship, even.
(re: shot)
Six in the corner. Stronger locks,
thicker doors, keep everybody where
they're s'posed to be. Don't even
need more rations.
As he sights along his cue, all the balls on the table flicker, disappearing for a moment, then reappearing. A general DISGUSTED GROAN comes from every player in the room.
WRIGHT (cont'd)
< Hey! > [Way!]
He looks toward the Bartender, as do other patrons. The Bartender points, bored, to a crude Sign: "MANAGEMENT NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR BALL FAILURE" (It also says it in Chinese.)
Wright attempts his shot, Doesn't sink the ball.
WRIGHT (cont'd)
Flicker threw me off.
Mal's turn. He walks around, examines the table.
JAYNE
(to Wright)
You made money?
WRIGHT
Hand over fist, my friend. Border
planets need labor. Terraforming
crews got a prodigious death rate.
MAL
Side pocket.
Mal makes his shot, lines up another.
MAL (cont'd)
Labor. You mean slaves.
WRIGHT
They wasn't volunteers, for damn sure.
MAL
That why you didn't hafta to lay in
more rations?
WRIGHT
I didn't hear no complaints.
Wright and Holder laugh.
JAYNE
How much money? Lots?
Mal misses a shot and steps back by Inara. She's brushing cigarette ashes off a chair, making a place to sit.
MAL
There's a chance you may wanna head
back to the ship.
INARA
Oh, I'm all right. This is
entertaining, actually.
MAL
(amused, disbelieving)
Yeah? What's entertaining?
INARA
I like watching the game. As with
other situations, the key seems to be
giving Jayne a heavy stick and
standing back.
ANGLE ON: Jayne, sinking one of the few remaining balls. Mal smiles at Inara, but:
MAL
Still think you might oughtta clear
out 'fore too much longer. Seems
there's a thief about.
INARA
A thief?
Mal leans in close, slips Inara a handful of paper money.
MAL
He took this right off 'em. They
earned that with the sweat of their
slave-tradin' brows.
INARA
Mal!
MAL
Terrible shame. 'Course, they won't
notice it 'til they go to pay for
their next drink --
WRIGHT (O.S.)
Hey! [Way!]
MAL
(to Inara)
Good drinker, that one.
Wright's hand falls heavily on Mal's shoulder. Mal spins and LANDS A MIGHTY PUNCH.
Behind them, Holder jumps to help Wright. Jayne TACKLES HIM.
Inara jumps back against a wall, as Wright KICKS MAL'S LEGS from under him. Mal falls.
Holder is up again, swinging a pool cue at Jayne.
Mal, on the floor, grabs the base of a small table and rams it UP at Wright. Wright flies back.
It's a melee. Other patrons jump to join.
Inara jumps when a GLASS SHATTERS near her head. She heads toward the door, fast. She passes the bartender as she goes.
INARA
(dryly)
Lovely place. I'll tell my friends.

So, what'd you think? Should I even try to do the rest of the episode?
I've got a bit of a problem. I'm thinking about dropping one of my language classes (Japanese or Latin), but I don't know which one to drop. See, at Mason, so far you can't major or minor in Japanese, so I would know it, and it would fulfill my languge requirement, but I couldn't really DO anything with it. Latin, on the other hand, you CAN minor in, but I'm not even sure if I want to do that. See, I like Latin because it's cool to figure out where words came from, since it's the base of the Romance languages and all, but I don't really want to take Roman Poetry and all of that other stuff...
And right now, there's this Asian American Women Writers literature course that I'm kinda interested in taking, but it's at the same time as my Japanese class. So I can't decide if I should drop Japanese and take that ('cause I still need another literature credit), or if I should keep going with both languages, or what...
Help...

Shopping for clothes has got to be the single most depressing activity in the world. I walk into Kohl's and "Hello, Welcome to Slutville!" All the clothes are just so trashy and cheaply-made... I need better places to shop. I just can't get over the fact that most of the "shorts" are less shorts and more denim underwear. -_- *le sigh*

But, on a better note, I got a haircut today and I'm quite pleased with it!
So, my weekend was cool. Went to stay in West Virginia in a friend's cabin for the weekend. That was nice and relaxing, except for the bugs. (I am horribly bug-phobic. *sigh*) But hey, there were ants in the fridge. I think that would gross most people out. Anyway, 'twas cool: Saw some deer, went swimming, spent lots of time reading...

At the moment I'm reading this biography on Eleanor Roosevelt for History, and it's actually pretty good. We've read two other biographies this semester and they were both pretty boring, but this one is pretty descriptive, so it stays interesting. It's not just a bunch of facts and dates, which I absolutely hate. I'm finding out more about Eleanor Roosevelt than I ever knew before.

Still practicing bass guitar. I'm beginning to seriously consider buying one, but still trying to decide whether or not I'll actually keep up with it. Laura and I are working on writing our own songs. I started one over the weekend called "Fish on the Prowl" (based on the character of Jesse from the first two eps. of Buffy), and so far I'm liking it. It's making me have more sympathy for Jesse than I ever did before. Hopefully someday we'll be able to do decent recordings of our stuff. And I might post the lyrics for the song on here once they're done.

Erm... that's pretty much it for now. Gotta go eat dinner. Hamburger Helper. Joy.

But I'll leave you with a cute Harry Potter fic I read this morning:
Registration, by: samvimes
Summary: When they get roped into waiting to register James' unborn son for Hogwarts, Sirius and Remus have a long day's wait, and a small dilemma -- nobody's picked a name yet. Faturing the Patils, Finnigans, Longbottoms, Malfoys, and one Weasley as supporting cast...
Enjoy!

Okay, so I probably shouldn't be saying that to myself, but anyway. Birthday yesterday. Twas incredibly fun. Got a yummy cake and nice presents (Yay for comic book money!) Got the Memoirs of a Geisha soundtrack, which I'm not sure if I'm keeping because my mom said she listened to some and it was good, but I haven't even seen the movie yet... Anybody heard it?
Ooooh, best present of the night, and the reason I'm typing to you from my LAPTOP right now: got a wireless card, so now I can hook up to my super-speedy internet connection and it's all just so very fun! I think now I actually am going to just stay in my room all day. I love this, though. In less than a week, I've gone from being years behind all my friends technology-wise to being completely caught up. ^____^ *squee!*

Yesterday was also cool because it's International Week at school and they had an international dance competiton. It was mostly Indian and Middle Eastern dances (the part that I saw, anyway) but they were really fun to watch. I need more Indian music... All I have is the Bend It Like Beckham soundtrack. Anybody have any recommendations...?

Anyway, must continue working on my IT project... so I'll do the updatey thing again later.

Oh, no. I'm getting into the never-posting thing again... Must. Not. Happen.

Problem is, nothing terribly interesting's been happening lately. Well, that's not entirely true...
We finally got cable internet!! Yay for not being dark-agey anymore! I love it so much, everything loads instantly! Been watching videos online all weekend. Youtube.com is a really cool website.
Also, Laura's been teaching me to play bass guitar. It's quite fun. The only song I can play really well so far is Green Day's "American Idiot", but I also sort of know a few Nirvana songs and one song that we're writing ourselves.
My birthday's tomorrow... which is weird, cuz I can't believe a whole year's gone by...

Aaaand that's pretty much it. I really need a beta reader, becuase I've got this short Buffy fic that I want to post, but I'm not even sure if I like it anymore...
And now I need to go work on my huge IT project due Friday. So, more later.
